Birds in our winter garden part 3

During last week we noticed two large birds flying around the woods but could never get a good clear shot of them.  We suspected hawks but the coloration on the belly was very light tan. Two days ago when my camera happened to be in my hand I thought I saw a large woody in our evergreen. And then it flew out of the shrubs and landed right above the sun room giving me a pretty good angle.

Hawk - suspecting that it may be Red-Shoulder or a Sharp-shinned but not sure.

  1. This is a hawk I'm not familiar with. I don't think it's a Sharpie but I'm not familiar with molts etc in your area. This beauty looks different.

  2. For me, hawks are a very difficult bird to ID. So many similarities...especially if you don't know the hawk family all that well...and that's ME. It takes days for me to know for sure. And THEN I'm not 100% sure. LOL

    Beautiful images, none-the-less.

  7. Dunno which hawk is which when they're so close in markings. All I know for sure is the white tailed hawk. Sorry I couldn't help.

  11. :) my blog gets it's name from these beauties, most assuredly a Red-Shouldered Hawk and did you know their voice is just about the loudest of all raptors in NA. What a great treat you got in seeing them so close, and mating season is upon us too~

    1. Thanks Mary! I found your blog very late last night! I learned a lot in a couple of days since I posted these! I think these hawks live here very close by all year long. Several times I noticed that there are two of them..so probably a couple starting their honeymoon.
